Summer is right around the corner, and as the school year comes to an end, the scorching heat begins.

Students at CHS and other schools with a/c often don’t realize how lucky they are. Although CHS doesn’t get as many days off due to the new BCPS heat policy, student don’t have to tolerate being in a ridiculously hot building all day long.

While some students may argue that they’d be “fine” without it, most students admit how glad they are to have it.

“Yeah, I’m glad we have it,” said sophomore Katie Thor Straten enthusiastically.

Students often have to bring a sweatshirt or sweater with them on hot days because the a/c makes classrooms feel like an icebox.

“It feels good when I walk into the building, but halfway through first period I have to put on a sweatshirt or I freeze,” said sophomore Nicole Epitropoulos.

“I definitely don’t want to get rid of it, but the school gets freezing during the hot months”, sophomore Ethan Clark explained.

But CHS didn’t always have a/c. When the math and science wing was built, it was the only part of the school with a/c.

Teachers that taught here before the wing was built reflect on how horrid the building was without a/c during the boiling months of the school year.

“Teachers would be wearing spaghetti straps and had on a million fans, but no matter what, we all still felt gross,” CHS teacher Marie Thrillkill explains.

As much of a distraction the heat was, teachers attempted to do whatever it took to get them to focus and get through hot school days.

“I remember one extremely hot day when none of my students could focus. I didn’t know what to do so I pulled out a winter coat from my closet, put it on, and told them, “If I can do it, you can do it,” mentioned CHS teacher Joel Bruseiwitz.

And in the end of the day, students must admit: As much as we love getting off on those hot summer days, we’re pretty grateful to have that refreshing a/c throughout the school.
