UMBC basketball has started their 2018-19 season with a solid 8-7 start. The Retrievers have had their struggles on both sides of the ball this year with a low 46.9% shooting percentage and giving up more than half of their shots at 53.4%. The Retrievers currently have the 306th ranked strength of schedule and play in the 28th ranked conference, the America East (per Ken Pomeroy).

UMBC opened the season with a terrible loss to Marquette, 67-42, shooting only 22%. They then went on to win 4 in a row, beating Air Force and High Point, coached by Hall-of-Famer Tubby Smith. They would drop the next 3 to tournament caliber teams, including a buzzer beater against American.

The Retrievers started December with 2 wins, including a domination of Drexel in Philadelphia. They’d only win 2 out of the last 5 and finish with an 8-7 record.

KJ Jackson has been leading the way for the Retrievers averaging 11.1 points and 4.1 rebounds. Dan Akin was injured for the first 11 games but has been an immediate impact for the Retrievers. They have lost some big players due to injury going into conference play including Max Curran (hand) and Arkel Lamar (foot).

The Retrievers are looking good going into conference play, projected with an 8-8 record and finishing in 4th place (Ken Pomeroy). Games against Stony Brook, Binghamton, and Hartford will be the key. They’ll need to keep the stars in the league quiet, to push the Retrievers over the edge, including Akwasi Yeboah (Stony Brook), JR Lynch (Hartford) and JC Show (Binghamton).

UMBC has begun conference play 1-0 and will return home on to face UMass Lowell on Wednesday January 19th.
