The Basics

Allergies are quickly approaching, and this year, due to the mild winter, are in full force. Find out the best way to attack your seasonal allergies!

Tip #1: Local Honey

Ingesting local honey into your digestive system allows to you to become immune to pollen. According to Mayo Clinic “studies have shown that honey consumed at a high dose can improve a person’s allergy symptoms over a period of eight weeks.”

Tip #2: Apple Cider Vinegar

Along with allergies come sinus infections because of the breeding ground congestion creates. Sipping a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar kills off germ growth within the throat and nose because according to  Reader’s Digest “most germs can’t survive in the acidic environment vinegar creates.”

Tip #3: Nasal Rinse

Gather up salt, baking soda, and warm water to rinse all the tiny particles that can build up in your nose and throat, causing stuffiness and congestion. According to Web MD, “Mix a half teaspoon of salt with a pinch of baking soda in eight ounces of warm distilled water.” Then, “lean over a sink and gently flush one nostril at a time.”

Tip #4 : Hot Tea (actually any nonalcoholic, hot beverage)

When you drink something hot, you are opening up your nasal passages to relieve your sore throat or stuffy nose. According to Web MD, ” hot fluids… have an added benefit: steam.” However, any beverage can sooth your throat passage when the allergies have been causing forceful and constant coughing.

Tip # 5: Shower

You want to wash all the possible pollen that has attached itself to you before you lay down in bed. When you lay down in bed, you allow the possible pollen on your skin to react to your immune system, causing miserable  symptoms.

Tip #6 : The most important part… Medication

Over-the-counter allergy medicine has different effects on individuals based on severity of the allergies. According to WebMD, using Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec, and possibly Benadryl ( if you are going to be indoors due to drowsy effect) are all possible medications that either decongest your immune or attack the histamine within your immune system to ease the allergic reaction.
