Procrastination is a big problem. Every person has let the lazy side of themselves take over at one point or another, allowing task upon task to just pile up. Once you start procrastinating it is hard to stop.
You may think you’re are doing just fine, that you have all the time in the world, but time moves fast. Suddenly that assignment that wasn’t due for another couple of weeks is due tomorrow and you have to pull an all–nighter. You will never find a moment where you’re the most disappointed in yourself then when you turn in an assignment that wasn’t your best effort.
We all have dreams and aspirations, but how can that be achieved if all we can carry out is the most mediocre of our abilities?
“I procrastinate every single day. It’s a very big problem for me,” said junior Maheen Imtiaz. Once you put that first paper to the side, everything starts to go downhill from there. Soon you’re faced with projects and essays galore, unsure of how you let things get this bad.
The answer may seem simple. Just stop procrastinating. If you just do your work when it’s given to you, you’ll save yourself from a lot of grief later. However, procrastination is much more than that. Once you start and develop a habit of it, you can’t stop. We tend to let the more self-gratifying tasks distract us.
Afterall, who would prefer to do APUSH homework over watching Netflix or seeing what the new trend on TikTok is? Not me, and certainly not you. Although binging on your favorite platforms seems more interesting, they’re not going to help you get a good grade or help improve your SAT scores.
This is exactly what junior Kimberly Justo-Hernandez thinks.
“Netflix always seems to come first. Like me, a lot of people don’t want to get stuff done because it doesn’t seem as important or fun as other self-gratifying tasks, again, like watching Netflix. They rather take the bad grade and do what makes them happy instead of just getting their work done,” she explained.
At the moment, doing what makes you happy may seem the most logical. Your peace of mind is worth more than losing hours of sleep studying concepts you just don’t understand. It may seem to make perfect sense, but getting everything done the day you get it, or at least starting it, will save you from stressing even more before deadlines approach.
“You can meditate and take some deep breathes to calm yourself down,” junior Latia Woolford advised, especially f you ever find yourself stressing about getting your work done. If you don’t understand something don’t panic. Just do your best and try not to worry about your grade if it doesn’t reflect the effort you put in.
The best advice anyone can give is to simply just do your best. If you continuously do your work, your teacher will notice and help you improve your grade. If you aren’t consistent with your work and do what you want, your grade will reflect that, and not as many grade boosting opportunities will be given to you.
A good way to make sure you stay on top of things is to schedule your day.
Justo-Hernandez suggests buying a planner, “because you can plan out your day, so you don’t get off track. You’ll always be on top of things. You can even plan free time so you can make sure you’re not forgetting to have a little fun.”
If you take the little amount of time to quickly jot down what you need to do and dedicate a set time for the assignment, you will never miss a deadline or a second of sleep again. It may seem like a lot of work, but once you start practicing and keeping up with your planner you will eventually develop a good habit. After all, practice makes permanent, not perfect. You are going to struggle with budgeting your schedule at times, and that is okay, but don’t let that discourage you. Keep trying, and you will thank yourself in the long run.
What it all really comes down to in the end is finding your motivation. What makes you want to do better? Is it your family? Friends? The idea of getting into accepted to college? Or getting your dream job? What is important to you?
Once you discover what makes you want to change your procrastinating ways, you will be able to overcome any obstacle and become the person who works wholeheartedly to turn in the upmost best of your abilities on time.
