When you walk away from your social media accounts forever, what really happens? Are your old accounts still accessible? Are they just left on the social network?

It’s important to delete your old social media accounts, whether it be from Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, or even Instagram. There are over 3 billion people that use social media networks around the world. Social media is a great way to communicate with friends, find out what’s going on with the world, and much more. But on the contrary, what you post or share on social media can come back to haunt you.

Something posted on the internet is on the internet forever. A very famous example of this is James Gunn. He is most famous for directing Guardians of the Galaxy. But recently, someone shared Gunn’s “old ‘edgy’ tweets making light of pedophilia almost a decade ago,” says Alice Clarke on The Sydney Morning Herold. This tweet came back to haunt him 10 years later and got him fired from his job.

This is just one example of many in which your old social media accounts are dangerous if they aren’t delete or updated. If you simply walk away from your social media network, you have to delete the actual account, or it puts you in danger of getting hacked or even a stolen identity.

Whether your deleting it because it’s an old account or because it’s become an addiction in your life, you can’t

just leave it there to rot on the internet. “Wanting to delete your account is one thing, but actually being able to hit the delete button is another story,” said the authors of How to Make a Clean Break with the Clingiest Social Networks. While it is important to delete your old social media accounts, it’s also good to know the difference between having a healthy relationship with social media and having an addiction to it. You need to know how to stop if you’re doing it for other reasons. Many big, worldwide social networks like Instagram and Facebook make it difficult to delete or deactivate your accounts because they make money from everyone and their information. But it’s important to figure out how to get rid of it if it’s becoming a problem in your life. Although Social Media is great for communication and good fun, it’s has it’s downsides and can become an issue for anyone.
