Melissa Newberry is a brand-new teacher at CHS. She attended many different schools in her past.

To study to become a teacher, she first attended Harford Community College on a full scholarship. She then attended Towson University where she earned her math degree.

Her pre-college school attendance was just as varied.

“I grew up on Long Island, New York. I went to Waverly Avenue Elementary School, Sir Moore Junior High School, Sicher High School, and Sachem High School. Then I moved to Maryland in 1994. I attended Fallston High School and graduated in 1997,” Ms. Newberry explained.

She started teaching at Fallston High School.

“I taught there for 12 years, and during that time I got my master’s degree from Notre Dame,” Ms. Newberry shared.

She was also a librarian for three years. Then she applied to teach in Baltimore County as a math teacher.

Did Mrs. Newberry always like math?

“I didn’t always like math, but I like it a lot now. I used to cry in 8th grade every day. During ninth grade things got better, and my teachers in New York were wonderful,” Ms. Newberry explained.

Her teachers started to help her out more and more. She gradually started to have a better understanding of math.

“It started clicking, and, then I was ,like, oh, it’s like a puzzle, I get it, it’s great,” Ms. Newberry said. She plans to teach for 14 more years before she finally retires.

Mrs. Newberry is not only a math teacher, but she is very busy and has plenty of hobbies, especially travel.

“I love to travel. I’ve traveled to Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, all over the united states, and the United Kingdom,” Mrs. Newberry shared.

Your average math teacher probably doesn’t have 6 pets, but Mrs. Newberry does.

“I have 2 rabbits, 2 rats, a chinchilla and a dog,” she said.
