Hobbies can help people overcome stress and find their way when they feel lost. Furthermore, hobbies can help a person become passionate about a certain subject, discover their creative side, and even boost their self-esteem. Some hobbies can even be so unique or revolutionary that they become popular across the world and a way of making good money.

When thinking of the word “hobby,” what comes to mind is along the lines of sports, music, or afterschool clubs. But the list doesn’t end there. Certain methods of passing time are the ones that some people don’t even know exist. And of the 1800 or so people at CHS, many are bound to have interests that would never be thought of by others.

Some of the more popular unusual hobbies are also lesser-known sports.

“When I was in college, I did Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,” science teacher Joseph Zaccagnini said. “I’ve been a wrester all throughout my life, but I didn’t want to join the team in college. So I joined a Jiu Jitsu gym and really enjoyed it. I still talk to people who I used to train with in West Virginia. I would definitely recommend it because it is the one thing that got me into good shape, as well as being fun and challenging, but not too difficult.”

Many people also enjoy the sport fishing.

“I like fly fishing,” junior John Dugan explained. “I got it from my dad. I know other people who do it as well, but not many. I would definitely recommend other people try it out.”

There are also fun ways to do hunting sports like shooting and archery without having to harm someone or something.

“I do competitive shooting,” sophomore Simon Weatherby stated. “I started when I was very young and was very good, Competitive shooting is time taking and also expensive.”

A great full-body workout is biking.

“I enjoy long-term biking trips,” substitute teacher Jimmy Hughes said. “I’ve always liked biking because it’s an easy way to get around. When I graduated high school, I biked across America with my friend. On the trip, I met many other people who were doing the same thing.”

Furthermore, there are hobbies that put unique twists on well-known past times.

“I do barbershop singing,” senior Allyson Toma said. “I learned it from a friend, who helped me realize that I was a good singer. If you love singing, give it a try.”

And alas, some people have interests that are generally unknown.

“My weird hobby is researching the supernatural,” sophomore James Barefoot said. “I do this kind research because of my past experiences. The information collected could help in situations. Some of the research can be creepy.”

Other people enjoy some of 2017’s new applications for phones and computers.

“I collect digital cards,” American Government teacher Kesari Petroff said. “My boyfriend does this as well, with Star Wars ones.”

No one should ever feel self-conscious about what they consider to be fun, because the things that “most people” consider interesting can just as easily be looked down on. So those who choose to be different don’t have to worry about what others think, because no opinion can be proven true or false.
